The sure-thing boys cleaned up big on the put-and-take craze of 30 years ago, and since fads of this sort have a habit of coming back you might file the following information for future use. We have seen many web directory of put-and-take top proposition and we know that there are various kinds of tops: high-and-Iow-numbered tops, tops bearing the names of racehorses and-the most popular of all-put-and-take tops. Crooked gambling-supply houses still do a good business selling fair put-and take tops at two bucks each and gaffed tops to match at $14. Con¬trolled racehorse tops run as high as $70.
The put-and-take top is eight-sided with the sides marked P-l, T-I, P-3, T-3, P-4, T-4, P-ALL, and either T-ALL or the letter T and a star. Any number can play. At the start of the game each player puts an equal stake in the pot and each player in turn spins the top. When the top stops and a P-4 appears on its uppermost side, the player puts four units into the pot, and so on; if T-ALL appears, he takes all the money in the pot; if P-ALL appears, he must put in an amount equal to that in the pot.
The top swindle is most often worked by two cheats who start playing the game with a fair top, usually in a bar or restaurant. Other people gather to watch, and it is seldom long before one or more of them join the game. When the action really gets going, one cheat switches a crooked top in and out of the game as required. When they want the suckers to put money into the pot, they switch in a top that will only throw P-l, P-3, P-4 and P-ALL. When the pot is big enough and it is one of the cheats' turn to spin, he switches in a top that is gaffed to come up T -ALL.
The gaff is on the edges of the tops, which are rounded on some sides and sharp on others. When the spinning top has lost its momentum and is coming to a stop it will roll off the sides with the rounded edges and stop on the sides whose edges are sharp. Cheats who lack the sleight-of-hand skill required for switching tops in and out of a game resort to the following kinds of crooked tops:
Some tops have alternate edges beveled so that when the player spins the top clockwise with his right hand (the normal manner), it always lands put. The cheat spins the top with his left hand counter clockwise and the top always lands take.
Some gaffed put-and-take tops have a central spindle which projects farther from one end of the top than the other. It is so beveled that take numbers always come up when the cheat is spinning. When he passes the top to the next player, he pushes the spindle down through the top so that the end that projected farthest becomes the short end and what was the upper side of the top becomes the bottom. This end-far-end reversal is the same as reversing the direction of the spin, and the player will throw more puts than takes.
A put-and-take top can be tested by changing the direction to see if that has any any effect on the result. But since most of the sure-thing boys keep switching their gaffed tops in and out of a game, you11 probably find you examining a square put-and-take top. We can see different type of links directory related to put-and-take top but the best advice is not to play with strangers, and that includes anyone you haven't known since you were knee high to a pup.
