Family vacations are something that most people look forward to, until they have a few hyper, anxious, or just really normal children and then it can be a very complicated process! Family vacations can be really great though, it just takes some thought, some input by all family members if applicable, and a desire by both parents to have a really good time. When all family members are on a quest for a perfect family vacation, it can be done.

The first rule for planning family vacations is to choose a destination that will be appropriate for all family members. For instance, you'll not want to plan a family vacation to Paris if that will require an eight hour flight for children that don't have the ability to stay still for that long. Likewise, you won't want to plan family vacations that even are across the state if they'll require that your children go to formal functions where they won't be able to behave appropriately. Parents really need to consider the appropriateness of their vacation destinations before they actually make any concrete plans. For the best results, consider your children on their worst behaved days, and plan family vacations around that. When you anticipate that your children will not be perfect, it will allow for you to actually plan a perfect vacation because it will be intended for them.

The next rule for planning nearly perfect family vacations is to chill out. Seriously, it sounds funny but even the idea of planning travel for your children may make you tense. So, relax and only think about having fun while making your travel arrangements. Also, pick a time to book your family vacations when the kids won't be hanging all over you, jumping on you, or even talking at you. When you are relaxed and your children aren't in your face, booking your family vacations will be a lot easier, and will even be fun! You might even feel like a kid yourself, because you'll easily be able to imagine having fun with your whole family.

Another great rule is to talk to your kids, those who are old enough to understand, about what they can expect from any travels you will be making to get to your destination. Family vacations are much more enjoyable, even the traveling part, when children understand what will be going on, how long it will take, and what will happen next. Communication is very important on family vacations so really talk to your kids, even let them in on the planning process as much as you are able.

Lastly, be patient on the travel day of your family vacations. Actually, be patient on your family vacations, period. Patience is required whenever you are dealing with a group of people, especially when you are dealing with small children. Remember to make plans that can be broken if necessary, and always consider the abilities and limitations physically, mentally, and maturity wise before following through with your plans. Your kids will love these family vacations because they are laid back and appropriate for the whole family.

If you take this laid back approach and really consider what is right for your family, your family vacations can be nearly perfect!
